And Some Flame Decals

  • Dec. 10th, 2009 at 10:21 PM

Extremely silly comic tonight. Don't worry, we'll find out what happened to Cosette on Monday! I know this, because the comic is already done.

Don't forget! I will be at this sweet event in Austin, TX this weekend! For those of you who have been asking, I will be there both days, from the time the event starts to the time it ends. I'll be doing free sketches and selling limited edition prints too! Hopefully I will see some of you there.

See the rest of you Monday!

More Zombie Goodness from HG World!

  • Dec. 10th, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Good news, everyone!

Jay Smith, aka [info]dr_p_venkman, and his merry band have released an all new episode of his zombie apocalypse serial audio drama HG World. The fifth episode of the series' "Season 0" is called "All the Greenery is Comin' Down, Boy," and is now available for download and your listening pleasure just by clicking on this linky-type thing right here.

I'd already performed some minor voice work for a previous installment, which I blabbed about in this log entry, and yet Jay somehow forgave me for that long enough to offer me a meatier part for this latest episode. This time around, a play a caller to Todd Rage's radio show, offering him a recap of the shitty day I've been having. You know, with respect to running from the living dead, and all that jazz. That's just a minor distraction, though, for the rest of the episode. To quote from Jay's show notes:

"The United Nations heads north to HG World. Refugees run from a guerrilla attack into the arms of a mob of eaters. Hicks' fate is revealed. Inside HG World, tensions rise as the lockdown continues and accidents lead to tough choices among the staff struggling to keep up appearances. A separate group of survivors tries to hold off Eaters from a mountaintop church."

Sounds like good old-fashioned family fun, if you ask me.

Thanks to Jay and the gang for letting me play along, again. Be sure to check out the show from the beginning, including the set of teaser vignettes anchored by Keith DeCandido ([info]kradical) as the voice of radio DJ Todd Rage. And remember: Always aim for the head!

Q&A: [info]apiphile

  • Dec. 10th, 2009 at 11:59 PM
1. So. When Phil brings his first girlfriend home to meet you, who do you think is going to be more nervous, you or her?
I'm presuming you mean a girlfriend that I don't know from her being a friend before, etc.? I think she'll be. I don't think I'll be that nervous to be honest.

2. When writing comic scripts, do you lay the panels out in your head, on the paper, or just do it the Marvel way?
I always sketch out a page first by panels, then put a note to the artist saying, for example, "five panels, one page length panel to the left, taking up about a quarter of the page, three roughly equal panels on the right, and one panel inset into the final panel."

3. Pick one song that best sums up last week?
You Can't Always Get What You Want

4. What do you want from 2010, in terms of change (personal, political, or any other kind)
A general (and genuine) change in how I see myself.

5. Where's the worst (geographical) place you've had to spend more than 24 hours in?
Leeds, but not because of the place, because of the circumstances.

Note to all: This is part of the Q&A Ask me five questions meme. Feel free to join in.

An interesting pet peeve of mine

  • Dec. 10th, 2009 at 3:40 PM
This came up through some jokery on a political forum I frequent (and reminded me of something that irritates me), but here is why I really liked Stephen Jay Gould:

Gould favored the argument that evolution has no inherent drive towards long-term progress. Uncritical commentaries often portray evolution as a ladder of progress, leading towards bigger, faster, and smarter organisms. The assumption being that evolution is somehow driving organisms to get more complex, and ultimately more like humankind. Gould argued that evolution's drive was not towards complexity, but towards diversification. Because life is constrained to begin with a simple starting point, any diversity resulting from this left wall will be perceived to move in the direction of higher complexity. But life, Gould argued, can easily adapt towards simplification, as is often the case with parasites.[32]

This point of his makes so much sense that it really irritates me that nearly nobody else keeps it in mind when writing or talking about evolution. Like, nobody. In fact, I have a really hard time explaining it to people, since the word "evolution" is so tangled up with the concept of betterment or progression.

The nice thing is, at least Wikipedia did a better job of explaining it than either Gould or I ever did.

Tweaks and enhancements

  • As a number of you reported, a service interruption impaired sending and receiving notifications for a couple of days. This was due to an avalanche of snowflake cookies. We've removed the free snowflake cookie and unclogged the pipeline. Timely notifications should resume shortly. Please note that there's a backlog in our queues, so you'll be getting earlier notifications first. For more details, check out this post at [info]lj_maintenance.
  • In anticipation of the new year, we've embarked on a self-improvement kick to boost our backend (pun semi-intended). This will allow us to offer you a holiday promotion in the next few weeks (yes, we're listening and working very hard to make it happen). We sincerely appreciate your continued patience and support.

Holiday vgifts are here!

We've added some fantastic new vgifts to help you spread holiday cheer. We also hope you'll honor AIDS Awareness Month by purchasing virtual red ribbons. Priced at $2.99, we'll donate 100 percent of gross proceeds to IAVI.org (the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) to support the development and global distribution of an affordable HIV vaccine.

Introducing: LJLimericks

We cordially here do invite you
To craft a fine limerick. Might you?
Each week, a new theme,
Then a poll, that's our dream
Winner posted on news to delight you!

In honor of all the brilliant writers on LiveJournal, we've created a brand new community: [info]ljlimericks! Each week, we'll enter a handful of limericks into a poll (which we'll tuck snugly under an LJ-Cut). The winning poem will be published in the following newsletter. In addition, the author will receive a virtual blue ribbon! If you have the time, come drop us a rhyme. Please keep the "Nantucket" stuff on the downlow, since this is a youth-friendly community. Our first prompt is: Insomnia in winter.

Photos of the week

We're back with more incredible images from our global photography community. Congratulations to [info]sempre_marseeya, who has been awarded a virtual blue ribbon as the winner of our second [info]lj_photophile poll.

We hate to squelch your creativity, but, as a courtesy to other users, please post only one photo at a time and keep the main photo no larger than 350x350 (so images display properly via mobile and on friends pages). You can link to a larger image and/or post photos under a cut. Just so you know, we select photos for the poll blindly, based on user comments and staff feedback. Please continue to vote, comment, and, of course, enjoy. You can check out the week in pictures and view more awesome user content after the jump!

Newspaper article

I was in the newspaper! My contacting the local news may have had something to do with the developer jumping into action as the work suddenly started on the mansion the day after the newspaper article appeared.

It is a shame they have to jump into action every day now at 7 am! Early morning silence is now shattered by a giant cherry picker, drills, buzz saws and men shouting. But it is good to know the building is being fully restored and turned into apartments.

Would people be interested to see progress pics of the house as it's returned to it's former glory if I post them here?

10 IT predictions for 2010

  • Dec. 10th, 2009 at 7:01 PM
No doubt, one of the leading IT stories in 2010 will be the role of the tech sector in the expected economic recovery. OK, so that's a no-brainer to predict, but we've found a limb or three to walk out on. In no particular order, we present the 2010 edition of our annual predictions.

Industry Shocker

  • Dec. 11th, 2009 at 7:25 AM
Breaking news that the Nielsen Co. is shutting down media watchdog Editor & Publisher, which has been around since 1884, and book review publication Kirkus Reviews. CJR has an interview with E&P's editor-in-chief about the news. I'm in shock: I've been reading E&P for years and it's been doing a wonderful job covering the rapid and depressing changes in the industry. And my author friends are upset about the demise of Kirkus Reviews, which provided valuable information for book buyers such as libraries.

Just a few quick nuggets today, and also a sincere thanks to everyone who's been sharing tales of their own nerdy humiliations in the comments section of yesterday's post. You've had me in stitches with some of these stories, and I very much appreciate the sharing!

+ A tip of the hat to the world's brainiest ladies - a record five women were awarded Nobel Prizes this year in fields as varied as literature and economics.

+ Speaking of smart chickies, Felicia Day will be guest starring on Fox's "Lie to Me" this coming Monday, and rumor has it, she'll be doing a bit of singing. Now if only Captain Hammer would turn up as well...

+ Pining for some "Chuck?" Here's 10 Questions with Zachary Levi. They're all trick questions and story problems - those TV Guide people are total bastards!

+ Students from the University of Michigan have learned how to use iPhones as musical instruments. Is there nothing those phones can't do? Well, fly. I know they can't do that. Not well, at least.

+ And finally, if things work out, there may be a Park Bench t-shirt available for purchase and frequent wearing quite soon. Stay tuned...
