Question for Creators

  • Jan. 7th, 2008 at 9:08 PM
Spirit
I've been curious about something recently.

You are a creator. Your creation (book, art, story, article, etc) is released and available to the public at large (be it a specific target audience or not).

You get feedback on the work. This is always nice and ALWAYS appreciated (unless that feedback happens to be nothing more than trolls, of course).

Now, the question I have is this: WHICH (or probably WHOSE) is the one you are MOST anxious for? In other words, whose feedback will... "validate" what you've done in your eyes? Do you understand what I'm asking? Is there any one particular person (or magazine review) that if they positively review your work, you will feel a slight "lifting of the shoulders"? One of those "I don't care what anyone else says, THIS PERSON liked it" kind of moments.

Please reply as I'd really like to hear from you. Thanks!

(and by the way, I don't need to hear anything like "you shouldn't be creating anything for anyone" because that's still not the point I'm asking about :) )

J.K. Rowling. If she liked my work I'd call it the validation of a lifetime.

Are you sending her copies? :)

Um... no.

...eventual prose publication.

A-ha! Ok then. As long as you've got a plan. Good. :)

honestly? I ask friends what they think of my work because I know that, for the most part, they will be encouraging and supportive and positive. I like it when a stranger, with not even the slightest investment in my happiness or state of being says that they like my work.

So, for you, it would be a comment from an unknown? I can see that -- impressing someone you don't know...

not even so much impressing as making an impression on either good or bad.

I'm worried most about impressing the editor, as they're the one who's gonna pay me. :)

LOL! So, as long as the editor likes it, you're happy?

Well, I'm happier than when he doesn't like it. :D

I know that sounded flippant, but what I really meant is that I don't get too wrapped up about reviews, good or bad. The good ones are nice to read, certainly, and the bad ones I just ignore. Besides, when you get one glowing review and one nasty, eviscerating review about the same book, which one are you supposed to go with? You'll drive yourself nuts. So, I just let it all roll off my back. :)

For me, positive feedback from the creators I admire is the best thing ever. Wendy Pini, Scott McCloud, Lois McMaster Bujold (who may not even read comics, but I can still dream). Numerous others. I'm nuts about Scott Pilgrim right now, so if Bryan Lee O'Malley were to pop by and say he enjoys my comics, I'd be grinning from ear to ear. I once got a letter from Richard Pini (back when I was publishing the floppies) saying that he liked Galaxion, and man, I was over the moon!

Ah. I definitely understand that! Do you send them copies in the hopes of hearing from them or do you know if they read you? Bryan's a funny guy :)

I'm not going to tell you I like Galaxion because the floppies and the trade sitting on my wife's book shelf is enough of an indication ;)

^_^

I sometimes send out copies to reviewers (and I will again when I have an actual book to send), and when it comes to creators I admire I will probably try to hand them a copy if I see them at a con or something. But I admit, positive feedback means more to me when it's unsolicited.

I, for one, am seriously looking forward to the day you collect the webcomics into a book!! :)

You may not remember this, but the last time we shared table/ floor space was back in 1999 - one weekend it was hobbystar in toronto, the following weekend was at smallpox in ottawa and you had just got engaged! :) I had picked up the trade then and had you sign it to my girlfriend who was getting into comics at the time (mainly because of Galaxion!) :) She is obviously my wife now :)

I have got to dig out those convention photos some day... I think the only person who has NOT changed since that day was Craig Taillefer!! LOL! :)

If I had just got engaged, it must have been 1997! David proposed Feb 14th of that year. ^_^

A friend of mine-- whom you probably know, Greg Beettam?-- recently posted some old con photos. Yikes! Who were those kids??

Yes, you are right, Craig has not changed at all. :-) Hey, am I going to be seeing you at future conventions?

Hm. No, I'm certain the day I have in mind was in 1999... which means there was something else of import that weekend... I may have to go back through some old notes to find out!! :)

Future conventions? Always a possibility. Just been a lot harder to go to in the last couple of years so I stuck with the Paradise Cons. Of course, if that con is now going away, I'm not sure where I'll haunt!
